The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday commercial created via AI following encountering significant public disapproval.

The short ad was created using generative AI clips and was initially published online for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media criticized the implementation of AI in the advert. A number of called it "creepy" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This experience represents an valuable lesson as we examine the effective utilization of Artificial Intelligence," said a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was created for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It showed various situations that might go awry during the Christmas break, with the theme "the most terrible time of the year".

A Growing Movement of AI Commercials

Commercials that incorporate AI-created content have emerged as a rising trend among large companies, notably for the Christmas season.

  • Another beverage giant has similarly launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because segments made using generative AI are prone to become unstable the more extended they are, most AI video outputs tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also provoked fears about the replacement of human roles in the advertising sector, with some observers pointing out it could negatively impact opportunities for production staff.

Defense from the Creators

After the video's removal, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

According to her, the creation required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then edited afterward "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't an AI gimmick," she commented. "It was a film."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the response for other AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday spot from Coca-Cola reportedly garnered a significant "favorable response" from the public.

However, several companies have also received backlash for employing the technique in marketing. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some called "cheap" and "uncanny".

The situation highlights the continuing debate within the advertising and production industries about the trade-off between technological innovation and audience reception.
